ATU Applauds Senate Confirmation of Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer as U.S. Secretary of Labor

Silver Spring, MD – Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International President John Costa issued the following statement applauding the Senate Confirmation of Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer to lead the U.S. Department of Labor

“As the largest union representing transit workers in North America, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) congratulates Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) on her bipartisan Senate confirmation as the next U.S. Secretary of Labor.

“Throughout her career in Congress, Rep. Chavez-DeRemer was a strong advocate for working people and unions. In her new role, we hope she has that same commitment to ensuring that workers have the ability to stand together and demand fair wages, safe working conditions, and a voice in their workplace. We also trust that she will defend workers' rights to organize and bargain collectively.

“The ATU has been an innovative leader in workforce development in the transit industry. Under Chavez-DeRemer’s leadership, we hope the Labor Department will continue to expand job training and apprenticeship programs to provide workers with the skills and knowledge to advance their careers.

“The ATU looks forward to working with Chavez-DeRemer to advocate for working people and their families, and we hope she will stand firm against efforts to undermine the rights and protections of American workers.”
