ATU Mourns the Loss of Former President Jimmy Carter

Silver Spring, MD – Amalgamated Transit Union International President John Costa released the following statement regarding the passing of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter.

“The oldest-living former president and humanitarian, Jimmy Carter, has passed away at the age of 100. Carter used his influence and prominence from his political career to help millions. In the 1960’s he supported civil rights and fought alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and his family despite political opposition. In 2002, Carter was awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for his peace negotiations between Israel and Egypt and his social welfare work during and after his presidency. In retirement, Carter turned to a lifetime of service with Habitat for Humanity to build, renovate, and repair 4,447 Habitat homes. Jimmy Carter once said, "One person, standing on principle, can make a positive difference in the lives of many.” There are few humans who have been more devoted to the mission of doing good than Jimmy Carter. His legacy is one of heart and conviction, and we thank him for his service to the world. May he rest in peace.”
