Fight Like Hell
As we move forward from the most contentious election in modern American history, the ATU remains committed to advocating for the values that define our nation—equality, justice, and opportunity for all. We will continue speaking out for the vulnerable, working families, and those who are most at risk.
We’ve made so much progress, but public transit, workers’ rights, healthcare, women’s rights, civil rights, and climate change hang in the balance. So, what do we do now? We fight like hell. We organize, take care of each other, and continue building working-class solidarity.
At the end of the day, the American people have spoken, but our commitment to democracy and human dignity remains unwavering. We will work tirelessly to hold this administration accountable to ensure that the needs of every citizen are met – not just the privileged few.
Our members across the country were critical in mobilizing the vote. From door-knocking to leafleting at transit stops, phone banking, text messaging, mailings, and campaign rallies, the ATU fought for pro-transit and pro-worker candidates and ballot initiatives. Thank you to our members and everyone for exercising your right to vote.
This is a time of reflection for all Americans. To our members in Canada, you know well what happens here in America comes north to the border, and you face these same threats. The road ahead will be challenging, but the ATU stands ready to build stronger, more equitable countries for all.
Challenges & Victories
Our history as a Union has been full of adversity, but it’s also full of victories—because the ATU never backs down. This year, we made significant strides in our efforts to secure better wages, benefits, and working conditions for our members. We organized new members. We successfully negotiated contracts reflecting the hard work you bring to your jobs every day. These victories are not just numbers on a page. They represent the welfare and dignity of you and your families.
Every strike and strike threat from Local 689-Washington, DC, Fairfax Connector workers to Local 1724-Vancouver, BC, HandyDART workers, from Local 1208-Jackson, MS, JTRAN workers to the Ontario Superior Court striking down legislation illegally limiting collective bargaining for our over 12,000 Local 113-Toronto, ON, TTC members – all of these actions embody the fighting spirit of the ATU. The battles you waged against incredible adversity this year have inspired us all.
We also provided our members with training in emerging technologies through our innovative workforce development programs. Our mentors, mentees, and apprentices are at the forefront of advancing transit systems across North America. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of our dedicated mentors who are instrumental in shaping the future of the transit industry. Your expertise, guidance, and unwavering commitment to training the next generation of transit workers are helping to build stronger, more resilient transportation systems for communities everywhere. Thank you for your vital role in preparing the leaders of tomorrow.
We also faced challenges that tested us. From budget cuts affecting transit services to the epidemic of violence on transit and attacks on our members and riders, the issues we confront are complex and require our continued vigilance.
In response to the increasing threats facing our transit systems, we intensified our efforts on the Bus of the Future initiative this year. This groundbreaking project aims to revolutionize the design and functionality of bus fleets across North America. By incorporating cutting-edge technology, enhanced safety features, and sustainable practices, the Bus of the Future will not only address current security concerns but also reshape the future of public transit for years to come.
Looking Ahead
This year has been defined by remarkable achievements, unforgettable moments, tough defeats, and continued struggles. Yet, through it all, we’ve remained unwavering in our commitment to our core mission: advocating for and protecting the rights and welfare of our members.
Looking ahead, we must fight for a better future for all workers. Together, we will tackle issues that threaten our livelihoods, like automation, privatization, and microtransit, while also pushing for more investments in our public transit systems that benefit workers and the communities we serve.
For over a century, the ATU has been at the forefront of worker resistance. We’re not going anywhere. We will reject cruelty and hate. We will fight against attacks on our rights and our dignity.
For many, this might feel like a dangerous and scary time for working people. But history has shown us that when workers unite, we have the power to change the world. Our job as union members, as transit workers, and as working-class people is to rise up and show that we will not be crushed by corporate greed or a political system that prioritizes the wealthy over the people who keep our countries moving.
I want to thank every one of you for your dedication to your work and your communities. It’s what makes our Union strong. In the face of adversity, you have shown unity, standing up for your rights and the rights of your coworkers. Our cities and towns would not run without you. I hope you know how invaluable you are.
Wishing you a safe, happy, and healthy New Year. Our future is ours to create. I’ll see you on the frontlines!
