ATU Launches First-Ever Zero Emission Bus University
Recently, our Local 192-Oakland, CA, and AC Transit launched the nation’s first transit-collegiate partnership, Zero Emission Bus University (ZEBU), which will pave the way for innovative training programs to prepare our members to repair and maintain zero emission vehicles.
College Credits
The groundbreaking partnership with Chabot College allows our maintenance members to serve as instructors for the college district, which enables AC Transit apprentices to earn credits toward an Associate of Science degree while also recognizing AC Transit’s ATU Local 192 Maintenance Trainers with the distinction of Instructors of Record for the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District.
The Federal Transit Administration awarded AC Transit with a Bus and Low-and No-Emission Grant Award to support sustainable public transportation. A portion of these funds support the development of a campus for training personnel to perform high-tech service on cutting-edge ZEB propulsion systems.
“This innovative Zero Emission Bus University is another step in our Union’s efforts as a leader in workforce development in the transit industry,” said International President John Costa. “We hope this program serves as a model for the ZEB industry and plan to expand it to other transit agencies where our members work.”
Renowned Program
At the core of ZEBU is the collaboration between our members and AC Transit, which has created a renowned workforce development program recognized by the state of California and the federal government for excellence in technical training, career development, and apprenticeships.
The ZEBU facility will feature classrooms, simulation of operational situations, vehicle maintenance procedures, and emergency scenarios for practical, hands-on learning.
The project is scheduled to be completed by 2026, and thanks to our members, AC Transit is on track to achieve a 100% tailpipe emission-free fleet ahead of California’s 2040 mandate.
