33rd Annual ATU International Latino Caucus Convenes in San Jose, CA
The 33rd Annual ATU International Latino Caucus in San Jose, CA, welcomed over 200 Local leaders and members to discuss the challenges and advancements in the transit industry from a Latino perspective, build solidarity, and celebrate our diverse Union.
Passion & Commitment
After a warm welcome from host Local 265-San Jose, CA, President/Business Agent Raj Singh, and California Conference Board Chairman and Local 1277-Los Angeles, CA, President/Business Agent Jeff Shaffer, International President John Costa thanked the members who traveled from across the U.S. and Canada.
Costa spoke about the importance of the work of the Caucus in fighting for diversity and inclusion in the labor movement. “Buenos dias!” Costa said, welcoming everyone to the conference. “I’m excited to see our members come together with so much passion and commitment. As we unite to amplify our voices and address the unique challenges faced by our Latino members, let’s remember that our collective strength and solidarity are the keys to achieving greater equity and justice in our workplaces and communities.”
Making Herstory
Next, International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, ATU’s first woman and Latina Executive Officer, and International Secretary-Treasurer Ken Kirk had the opportunity to address the Caucus, discussing critical issues impacting our Union and what’s at stake in the U.S. election in November.
Attendees also heard an informative presentation on the perils of microtransit and the impact on our members’ jobs.
El Grito de la Cultura
On Day two, the Caucus kicked off with an amazing dance performance by El Grito de la Cultura. Dancers as young as seven displayed their passion for their beautiful culture, bringing everyone to their feet.
Caucus Elections
Elections were also held for Recording Secretary of the Latino Caucus. Congratulations to Local 1555-Oakland, CA, Vanessa Peréz, who was elected to the position and sworn in by International President Costa.
After years of dedicated service to the Caucus and our Union, Caucus President Ismael Rivera stepped down. His leadership and mentorship, driven by his passion for fighting for La Raza, have been instrumental in shaping the International Latino Caucus.
Costa, Trujillo, and Kirk were also joined at the Caucus by International Vice Presidents Jim Lindsay, Manny Sforza, Natalie Cruz, Art Aguilar, Mark Henry, and Michael Cornelius.
The ATU International Latino Caucus symbolizes unity, culture, and the advancement of our shared purpose. We are proud of everyone who has amplified Latino voices in our Union. Todos Unidos!
