There Is Division Everywhere: What This Moment Demands of Us

As we confront the growing pressures on democracy, it becomes clear that the challenges facing working people aren’t isolated events. They’re connected, coordinated, and accelerating. The forces dividing us rely on one dangerous assumption that ordinary people will stay silent while power is consolidated above them. We must reject that assumption completely.

Democracy as Daily Practice

This moment demands more from us than frustration or commentary. It requires engagement that matches the seriousness of the threats we face. Democracy isn’t simply a system of government. It’s a daily practice of participation, accountability, and collective responsibility. When that practice weakens, the entire structure begins to crack.

Labor Mobilizes

Our Union in conjunction with the AFL-CIO and central labor bodies have launched major efforts ahead of the U.S. midterm elections to defend democratic participation and strengthen the voice of working people. Their programs include large scale voter education campaigns, expanded member to member outreach, and thousands of volunteers committed to protecting the integrity of the vote. These efforts are not about partisanship. They are about keeping working people in the democratic conversation.

Constituency Groups Lead the Way

Labor’s constituency groups are also stepping forward in powerful ways. CBTU is mobilizing Black workers against voter suppression and misinformation. APRI is running transportation to the polls programs and legal rights education in communities that face the greatest barriers to voting. CLUW is organizing women workers around economic security, healthcare, and the political decisions that shape family stability. LULAC is leading large scale Latino voter registration drives and Spanish language education campaigns. These groups participate in and protect democracy.

Our Fights Are Connected

This aligns directly with our own mission. The ATU has always been strongest when we recognize that our fights are interconnected. The struggle for fair wages is tied to the struggle for political representation. The fight for affordable housing is tied to the fight against corporate influence. The battle against poverty is tied to the battle for dignity and respect on the job. None of these issues stand alone, and neither can we.

So, what does this moment require?

It requires courage to speak up when silence feels safer. It requires discipline to stay organized even when progress feels slow. It requires unity to see beyond our differences and recognize our shared fate as working people.

Turning Values into Action

We must build stronger relationships within our communities, deepen our involvement in local decision making, and ensure that every member understands the power they hold. Education, mobilization, and solidarity are survival tools.

The truth is simple. Democracy survives only when people defend it, and working people thrive only when they stand together. If we want a future where our children inherit opportunity instead of instability, then we must commit ourselves to a unity that can’t be broken.

This is our moment, and history will remember what we chose to do with it.
