Skilled Labor Is Necessary for an Equitable Tomorrow

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held annually in Las Vegas, NV, is the world’s largest trade show for innovation in consumer technology. It showcases groundbreaking technology advancements like artificial intelligence and transportation. I was able to attend CES this year, along with attending the AFL-CIO’s Labor Innovation and Technology (LIT) Summit with International President Costa. Among the most concerning innovations at this year’s CES were autonomous vehicles, which could significantly transform the transit industry and impact our members.

Protecting Worker Rights in the Age of Tech

For the ATU, autonomous vehicles bring numerous challenges. Autonomous vehicles are rapidly becoming a reality, and while we support innovation that improves transportation, we must also ensure that workers’ rights are protected. We also have serious concerns about the safety of autonomous vehicles. Just check out the article in this magazine on ‘The Rise and Fall of General Motors’ Cruise Robotaxis.’ The impact of autonomous vehicles touches every aspect of transit, from labor practices to the cost for communities.

Labor is collaborating within and across sectors to guarantee that workers are part of the conversation about emerging technologies. Because of the ATU, transit workers will not be left behind.

Necessary Skills

The future is here. That’s why the ATU has also prioritized workforce development to equip our members with the skills necessary for a changing industry. In January, we celebrated National Mentoring Month, which serves as a reminder of the profound impact mentoring can have on both individuals and communities. Mentoring plays a crucial role in shaping future leaders within the transit industry, from helping workers gain new skills to supporting the next generation of Union leadership. Mentorship builds solidarity, ensuring that younger transit workers are equipped to navigate the industry’s challenges. Our Union thrives because of the guidance and support that mentors provide, and it’s essential that we continue this tradition to uphold the strength and unity of our Union.

Backbone of Our Union

Equally significant is the role of Shop Stewards. I recently attended a Shop Stewards training in Ontario, CA.  These trainings are crucial in enabling our members to take an active role in their workplace. As a former Shop Steward, I know the important role they play to ensure our members’ voices are heard. Investing in Shop Steward training goes beyond merely protecting workers’ rights. It focuses on developing leaders who will advocate for fair treatment, better wages, and safer working conditions.

As technology continues to transform the transit industry, strong mentorship and effective training are key. This way, we can ensure that every member feels supported and empowered.

Under the leadership of International President Costa, the ATU remains dedicated to standing with our members and advocating for our rights in a rapidly developing industry. The impact of autonomous vehicles, the importance of mentoring, and the significance of Shop Steward training all indicate a future where transit workers remain necessary and central to the success of our Union and our industry.
