Local 689 Martz Gold Line Workers Wage Six-Day Strike to Win and Ratify Strong Contract
After six days on the picket line, our Local 689 Martz Gold Line members emerged victorious with a new, strong contract, signaling a win for workers’ rights and solidarity. The agreement came after tense negotiations between the Local and the company. The strike began on April 24, 2025, and was sparked by allegations of unfair labor practices and the company’s refusal to bargain in good faith.
A Victory Built on Solidarity
“Throughout the negotiations and strike, Martz workers stood shoulder to shoulder in solidarity, and together they won a strong contract,” said Local President/Business Agent Raymond Jackson. “Once again, workers have proven that workers bonded together and speaking with one voice are undefeatable. We thank Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Maryland Secretary of Transportation Paul Wiedefeld, and Maryland Senior Director of Labor Relations Dyana Forester for their support, as well as the other elected officials and allies who have supported these workers on the strike line.”
Key Wins for Workers
The newly ratified contract includes several key components that directly benefit our members, with a special focus on addressing the rising cost of living. One of the standout elements is the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) clause, which will be implemented in the second and third years of the contract. In addition to the COLA provision, the contract also includes significant improvements in wages, benefits, and working conditions.
Support from Across North America
The strike was not just a Local issue—it became a rallying point for our members across North America, with various Locals and members sending their support. International President John Costa visited the picket line to fire up our Martz Gold Line members and praise them for their courage and determination.
“When we fight, we win! All of the ATU spread across America and Canada are proud of what Martz Gold Line workers accomplished,” said Costa. “On the picket lines, I saw firsthand their strength, unity, and solidarity. United, the workers stood up to the company and, through the strength on the strike line, forced the company to the bargaining table and won a strong contract. These workers demonstrated the strength of collective action and its impact on working people.”
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Worker Power
The successful outcome of this strike sends a clear message: collective action works. It demonstrates the power of workers when they stand united and demand what they deserve. The courage and unity displayed by Local 689 members have set a new standard for what’s possible when workers fight for what they deserve.
