Marching for Justice: ATU Leaders Honor Cesar Chavez’s Legacy in San Francisco

San Francisco’s iconic Dolores Park came alive with music, movement, and purpose as members of the ATU gathered for the annual Cesar Chavez Parade in April. The event, rich in culture and activism, served as a powerful reminder of the labor movement’s roots—and its ongoing fight for justice. Among those leading the way were two trailblazing women in labor: ATU’s first Latina International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo and International Vice President Natalie Cruz.

Leading with Visibility and Heart

Standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow union members, Trujillo and Cruz brought visibility, energy, and heart to an event that honors the enduring legacy of civil rights icon Cesar Chavez. Their presence spoke volumes—not only about the progress the labor movement has made, but also about its growing commitment to inclusivity, immigrant rights, and community power.

“Marching here today is about more than remembering history,” said Trujillo. “It’s about carrying that legacy forward through our actions, our advocacy, and our unity as working people.”

A Call to Action for Today’s Labor Battles

The Cesar Chavez Parade has long been a space for communities to reflect on the hard-won victories of farmworkers, immigrants, and organized labor. This year, the ATU contingent emphasized that those battles are far from over. From fair wages and safe working conditions to protections for immigrant workers, the parade served as a call to action.

Pride, Power, and Progress

The event was also a proud moment for ATU members, who carried banners, waved union flags, and chanted in unison: “Sí se puede!”—yes, we can. That same spirit continues to guide our Union in its mission to build a fairer, more equitable future for all.

As the parade wound through the Mission District, the message was clear: the fight for justice is alive and well. And with leaders like Trujillo, Cruz and our members, the ATU is marching forward — stronger and more united than ever.
