ATU Hosts Historic First-Ever Pride Caucus Meeting in New Orleans
The ATU took a powerful step forward in March with the historic launch of its first-ever Pride Caucus meeting, held in New Orleans, LA. This milestone gathering marked a new chapter in our Union’s commitment to inclusion, equity, and solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ members. International President John Costa had the honor of serving as the event’s keynote speaker, delivering a message of unity, respect, and pride.
A Message of Unity from International President Costa
“Our Union is built on the principle that everyone deserves respect and protection regardless of their background, identity, or orientation,” said Costa. “And that’s why I’m here today—to reaffirm our commitment to making sure that those principles extend to all members and their families everywhere. Pride is not just a celebration. It is a declaration. A declaration that our identities are valid. A declaration that we are seen and heard. A declaration that we will not be silenced by hate, discrimination, or injustice. This is why the Pride Caucus is such a vital part of our Union. I’m proud of you, we are proud of you, we stand with you, and we are committed to building a better, more inclusive future for everyone.”
The Pride Caucus provides a crucial platform for LGBTQIA+ members and allies across the ATU to come together, share their stories, and work toward a more inclusive and representative union. It stands as a safe space and a springboard for advocacy, education, and community-building.
Training, Panels, and Empowerment
Throughout the weekend, attendees engaged in powerful training and panels covering a range of topics—from navigating overlapping identities and creating Local Pride Caucuses to legal updates and strategies for being effective allies in the workplace and beyond. The event also featured guidance from key advocates and leaders within the broader labor movement.
Among those lending their expertise and passion were Brittany Anderson, Interim Executive Director of Pride at Work, and Keturah Johnson, Vice President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, who brought unique perspectives on intersectionality and collective action.
A Movement, Not Just a Meeting
On day two of the Caucus, Costa emphasized that the Pride Caucus is more than just a meeting—it’s a movement. “At the heart of the ATU, we stand united in our commitment to equality, respect, and inclusivity for all,” continued Costa. “The ATU Pride Caucus is a vital force in our ongoing fight for justice and dignity, and we proudly support you in your efforts to ensure that every member feels valued and empowered. Together, we’ll continue to build a stronger, more inclusive ATU where everyone can thrive and no one is left behind.”
As a testament to his longstanding advocacy for diversity within our Union, Costa was honored with the Caucus’ highest recognition—the Harvey Milk Award. This prestigious honor reflects his unwavering dedication to lifting up every voice within the ATU family.
Costa was joined by International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, International Secretary-Treasurer Ken Kirk, and International Vice Presidents from across the U.S. and Canada, showcasing our leadership’s unified support for this landmark event.
Looking Ahead with Pride and Purpose
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the members, the Pride Caucus board, all speakers, panelists, and trainers who brought their knowledge, experience, and energy to this important gathering. Together, they helped lay the foundation for what promises to be a growing and powerful voice within the ATU.
The Pride Caucus is a celebration of who we are, a reflection of how far we’ve come, and a bold statement about the inclusive future we are building together. Solidarity forever.
