ATU GEB Spring Meeting: A Powerful Week in New Orleans

The ATU General Executive Board (GEB) gathered this spring in vibrant New Orleans, LA, for a dynamic and productive week of collaboration. Over five impactful days, our leaders from across the U.S. and Canada came together to chart the future for our Union and reinforce their shared commitment to justice.

Day 1: Setting the Tone for Progress

Chaired by International President John Costa, the opening day of the GEB meeting kicked off with powerful discussions on ATU’s political influence and organizing strategy. The discussion focused on updates on federal and state elections, emphasizing our Union’s vital role in shaping policy and protecting workers’ rights. From fair wages to workplace safety, the ATU remains focused on advancing key priorities. “We’re building a stronger Union, one step at a time,” Costa said.

Day 2: Worker Safety and Solidarity

Health and safety took center stage on day two, with expert presentations addressing critical concerns facing transit workers. Legal updates were also shared to keep our Union informed and protected. The well-being of our members is a top priority, and we are committed to advocating for safer working conditions at every level and ensuring our members’ legal rights are protected.

AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler also delivered inspiring remarks, highlighting the power of solidarity. Joining her was Louisiana AFL-CIO President Louis Reine, who warmly welcomed our GEB to the state. Together, they reinforced the importance of worker unity and collective action.

Day 3: A Bold Vision for the Future

Day three featured a major highlight: the unveiling of plans for ATU’s new headquarters at 21 Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C.  “This marks an exciting and historic new chapter,” Costa said. “Our new headquarters will be a beacon of worker empowerment and a powerful symbol of our mission in action.”

Days 4 & 5: Building Power Through Organizing and Training

The final two days focused on ongoing campaigns, negotiations, workforce development, and communications. From organizing strategies to expanding training programs, every session emphasized elevating our members’ voices and meeting their needs.

“Workers are demanding more—and they deserve it,” Costa said. “The work being done by our International and Local is inspiring. We’re not just talking about change—we’re actively driving it.”

Stronger Together

Throughout the week, GEB members also connected with Local leaders from across Louisiana, celebrating the incredible progress being made in the South. Thank you to Locals from Baton Rouge, Harahan, Shreveport, and New Orleans for welcoming us to your state.

From start to finish, the Spring GEB meeting was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when our Union unites around a shared mission. As Costa put it, “We’re pushing forward with even more determination. The ATU is stronger, bolder, and more united than ever.”
