Inaugural ATU Northeast Conference Convenes in Atlantic City, NJ
International President John Costa returned to his roots in his home state of New Jersey to help kick off the first-ever ATU Northeast Conference in Atlantic City, bringing together Locals from across the East Coast in a powerful display of unity and strength. This inaugural event marked a significant milestone for our Union, setting the stage for future growth and collaboration across the region.
The energy in the room was electric as leaders and members gathered to share ideas, address pressing challenges, and chart a path forward for our movement. Costa delivered a passionate opening, emphasizing key issues facing each of our Locals in the Northeast and highlighting the crucial role frontline workers play in shaping the future of public transportation.
Discussions covered vital topics, including strategies to combat workplace harassment, the integration of new transit technologies, and the advancement of workers’ rights. Attendees exchanged stories, strategies, and advice, building solidarity that transcended city and state lines. This powerful sense of unity underscored the importance of supporting each other, not just within our own Locals, but as part of a united regional force determined to make a lasting impact.
“The ATU is thriving in the Northeast. We’re advancing key legislation, like banning riders who assault workers, requiring drivers in autonomous vehicles, and mandating full bus barriers, while also fighting harmful proposals, like forced union recertification,” said Costa. He went on to acknowledge the critical work of our members in the Northeast, stressing that their efforts are crucial to both the success of our Locals and the overall growth of the ATU. “Your work is building a strong, united front, and I’m proud to witness the first meeting of what will undoubtedly be a powerful force within the ATU.”
Costa’s words set the tone for the work ahead. He was joined at the conference by International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, International Secretary Treasurer Ken Kirk, and International Vice Presidents Ray Greaves, Amanda Sawyer-Turner, Jacques Chapman, and Mark Henry who represent members across the Northeast.
A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who contributed to making this historic conference a success. The fight for workers’ rights never stops, and with continued unity, dedication, and commitment, the future remains bright for our ATU family.
