ATU’s Workforce Development Programs Empower Our Members
The ATU’s industry-leading Workforce Development programs have played a critical role in training our members. Our apprenticeships prepare our members for the challenges they will face on the job, particularly with the changing technology in the transit industry, while providing an opportunity to advance their careers.
With a mix of hands-on experience, mentorship, and classroom instruction, these programs help our members to learn and master specific skills to ensure the safe and reliable public transportation that our riders and communities rely on.
Under International President John Costa’s leadership, the ATU has prioritized these programs by offering International support through staffing, expertise, logistics, and anything else our Locals and members need. We highlight a few of these innovative programs at Locals across our Union.
Local 1001-Denver, CO, Launches First-Ever Bus Mechanic Apprenticeship
Our Local 1001-Denver, CO, worked with the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) to develop the first-ever Bus Mechanic Apprenticeship Program for public transit in Colorado. This groundbreaking program is a major win for workforce development and the future of transit maintenance. The Local’s first Bus Mechanic Mentors are playing a key role in guiding and supporting the next generation of skilled maintenance workers at the RTD.
Local 1575-San Rafael, CA, Apprentices Earn College Credits
The newest group of Coach Operator Apprentices from Local 1575 working for Golden Gate Transit successfully completed their registered apprenticeship program in partnership with the College of Marin. Not only did they learn valuable skills, but these dedicated frontline workers earned a Certificate of Achievement from the College of Marin—and with it, 12 college credits that count directly toward an Associate of Arts degree if they choose to continue their education at the California Community Colleges system.
Local 580-Syracuse, NY, Mentors to Lead the Way
In Syracuse, NY, our Local 580-Syracuse, NY, and CENTRO launched the first Coach Operator Mentorship program in the state of New York. The skills and experience of these Mentors will help to teach CENTRO’s newest Coach Operators that operating a public transit bus isn’t just about driving a bus, it’s about dealing with riders, safety, and other challenges. Mentors also help increase retention, reduce absenteeism, and improve workplace cultures.
“These programs are powerful examples of how our Union’s workforce development programs can create real career pathways to upward mobility and long-term stability in public transportation and even open doors to higher education,” said International President John Costa. “Thank you to these Locals and members for leading the way.”
