ATU Western States Conference Brings Power and Purpose to Spokane, WA

Spokane, WA, hosted a powerful gathering of transit workers and ATU leaders from across the Western states and provinces in June. The ATU Western States Conference brought together members from the Northwest Conference Board and the California Conference Board, underscoring the critical importance of unity, solidarity, and shared purpose in facing the evolving challenges of the transit industry.

A Message of Strength Through Unity

In a keynote address that resonated with passion and purpose, Costa emphasized the collective strength of the ATU’s membership across the region. “When transit workers from every corner of the Western states and provinces come together, we amplify our voice and push for the respect, safety, and fair treatment every worker deserves,” he told attendees. “You’re the backbone of public transportation and vital to the daily lives of millions. This meeting is a testament to the ATU’s commitment to building a regional network of empowered workers who can stand together to meet the challenges of today’s transit industry.”

New Leaders, Renewed Purpose

A particularly moving moment came during Day Two of the conference when Costa swore in the newly elected officers of the Northwest and California Conference Boards. These two bodies play a crucial role in representing transit workers across the West, and their new leadership promises to bring fresh energy and dedication to the cause.

“You as leaders are the frontline of our fight for justice, dignity, and better lives for our members,” Costa told them. He reminded everyone that true leadership comes not just from position. “The real power in our movement comes from the courage to lead.”

Driving Momentum

International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, International Secretary-Treasurer Ken Kirk, and International Vice Presidents Jim Lindsay, John Callahan, Art Aguliar, and Michael Cornellius joined Costa throughout the conference, reinforcing the unified leadership at all levels of ATU.

As the conference concluded, the message was clear: the ATU is not just reacting to today’s challenges—it is proactively shaping the future of transit.

Stay tuned as this momentum grows. The future of transit, powered by the workers who make it move, is just getting started.
