The Union Difference
While some may not like politics or agree with my political position, know with certainty that our work in transportation is connected to politics in one way or another. Whether it’s the local transit board that oversees your transit system, state/federal officials deciding where transit is offered and proposing budgets that provide for our wages and benefits, or a school board saying which kids get a bus to school and which don’t. One way or another politics and the candidates we elect are tied to how we as workers advance in this changing industry.
Unions are at the forefront of pushing for policies that benefit the working class, from fair wages and healthcare to safe working conditions and the right to organize. We currently have two candidates for U.S. President who have distinct records of what we can expect from each.
Vice President Harris has shown a consistent commitment to protecting workers’ rights and supporting the labor movement. As a U.S. Senator and Vice President, Harris has advocated for policies that protect workers, including raising the minimum wage, strengthening labor unions, and ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions. She has been a vocal supporter of the PRO Act, which aims to make it easier for workers to organize and bargain collectively, and has backed legislation to improve worker protections and expand overtime pay.
She has been a strong advocate for investing in public transit infrastructure, improving transit worker safety, and recognizes the importance of a robust public transit system to reduce traffic congestion, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and provide accessible transportation for all. Vice President Harris has supported federal funding for public transportation projects, and her approach to public transit aligns with broader efforts to invest in sustainable transportation solutions.
We cannot forget Donald Trump’s tenure as president, which was marked by actions that were hostile to labor unions and workers’ rights. His administration rolled back numerous regulations designed to protect workers, including overtime pay protections and safety regulations. His administration’s approach to labor was more aligned with corporate interests, often prioritizing deregulation over worker protections. Trump also appointed several anti-labor figures to key positions, including the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which weakened collective bargaining rights and worker protections. Under Trump, the NLRB issued decisions that favored employers, making it more difficult for workers to organize and unionize.
His administration’s approach to public transit was characterized by significant funding cuts and overly focused on traditional forms of transportation, like roads and highways, rather than investing in public transit systems. Not to mention, his administration proposed significant cuts to the Department of Transportation’s budget, which would have reduced funding for mass transit projects. Trump’s policies and actions were often regressive, favoring corporate interests over workers and neglecting sustainable public transit.
Vice President Harris’s policies and track record demonstrate a clear commitment to advancing the labor movement and improving public transit. Her approach is rooted in a vision of inclusivity and equity, focusing on creating a fairer society for all, not one of fear and division. Vice President Harris’s leadership, along with Governor Tim Walz, represents a path forward that aligns with the needs of working families and public transit.
It’s your decision, who you vote for, but the choice seems clear!
