International President John Costa joined the ATU Illinois Joint Conference as they came together in full force at the State Capitol in Springfield for an effective week of advocating for our members.
“When transit workers speak with one voice, legislators listen. And our voices will not be ignored. This week in Illinois, we showed the power of solidarity and the strength of our union. ATU members aren’t just fighting for better jobs — we’re fighting for better transit, safer communities, and a future that works for everyone. Thank you for your energy, passion, and dedication. You are the union, and I’m proud of the work you’re doing here in Illinois.”
We were also honored to be joined by several elected officials and labor leaders who spoke passionately in support of our mission, standing shoulder to shoulder with transit workers who keep Illinois moving every single day. Union members from across the state also headed to the Capitol for a lobby day to meet with lawmakers, share their stories, and advocate for stronger public transit through worker protections and better funding for the services our communities depend on.

Costa was joined at the Conference by International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, International Secretary Treasurer Ken Kirk, and International Vice Presidents Marcellus Barnes, Michelle Sommers, and Natalie Cruz.
This is what democracy looks like: workers engaging directly with legislators, fighting for fairness, safety, and dignity on the job. Thank you to everyone who took part and contributed to making this week a strong reminder of what we can accomplish when we fight together!
