Day 2 of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago was just as exciting as the first. Representing the ATU were DNC New Jersey Delegate International President John Costa, International Vice President Yvette Trujillo, Secretary-Treasurer Ken Kirk, International Vice Presidents Natalie Cruz and Ray Greaves, and Chicago’s own Local 241 and Local 308 Presidents Keith Hill and Pennie McCoach.
The second night showcased an exciting double dose of Obama firepower with former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, reminding everyone, “America, hope is making a comeback.” Barack and Michelle brought down the house, lifting Kamala up as a champion of the people and contrasting her with Trump, “a 78-year-old billionaire who hasn’t stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago,” said Obama to the passionate crowd.
Other inspiring speakers included Senator Tammy Duckworth, Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Bernie Sanders, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, candidate for Maryland Senate Angela Alsobrooks, First Gentlemen Doug Emhoff, and more.
President Costa also had the opportunity to talk with honorable elected officials who support workers and public transit, including Rep. Mikie Sherrill, Rep. Rob Menendez, as well as our brothers and sisters in labor and other Democratic leaders.
Another highlight of the night was a state role call of delegates ending in the official nomination of Kamala Harris as President and Tim Walz as Vice President.
Before heading to the convention hall, the group stopped by Unite the Country, whose goal is to support Vice President Kamala Harris and promote her policies designed to improve the lives of all Americans. The group also got to meet with Jim and Sara Biden while there.
Day 3 starts today.
