Today in Jackson, MS, International President John Costa fired up our striking Local 1208-Jackson, MS, JTRAN members on their picket lines in their weeklong strike for a fair contract and better service for their riders.
Pledging the support of the International, Costa urged our members to “Hold the Line” and called out JTRAN contractor MV Transportation. “We know these private transit companies like MV well. All they care about is making a profit on the backs of workers. It doesn’t work for the people who rely on this service. It jeopardizes safety and service,” said Costa. “Public transit is a service for the people. It’s time for MV to come to the table to get this deal done now for our riders, our members, and the community.”
In an effort to help end the strike, Costa met with Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, Jackson City Attorney Drew Martin, and staff. They discussed the unfair treatment of our members and urged the Mayor to ask MV to honor our contract. Joining Costa at the meeting were Local President Charles Tornes, International Vice President Curtis Howard, ATU Organizer RiChard Jackson, and Local 1208 officers. We thank the Mayor for his time and the productive discussion.
What’s clear is our JTRAN members are united. They will not back down!
