Bienvenidos from the 33rd Annual ATU International Latino Caucus in San Jose, California, where over 200 Local leaders and members gathered to discuss the challenges and advancements in the transit industry from a Latino perspective, build solidarity, and celebrate our diverse Union.
 
After a warm welcome from host Local 265-San Jose, CA, President/Business Agent Raj Singh, and California Conference Board Chairman and Local 1277-Los Angeles, CA, President/Business Agent Jeff Shaffer, International President John Costa thanked the members who traveled from across the U.S. and Canada. Costa spoke about the importance of the work of the Caucus in fighting for diversity and inclusion in the labor movement and the importance of the historic election in the U.S. “Buenos dias!” Costa said, welcoming everyone to the conference. “I’m excited to see our members come together with so much passion and commitment. As we unite to amplify our voices and address the unique challenges faced by our Latino members, let’s remember that our collective strength and solidarity are the keys to achieving greater equity and justice in our workplaces and communities. Together, we’ll continue making a lasting impact. Thank you for being here and for your unwavering dedication to our Union.”
Next, International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, ATU’s first woman and Latina Executive Officer, and International Secretary-Treasurer Ken Kirk had the opportunity to address the Caucus, discussing critical issues impacting our Union and what’s at stake in the U.S. election in November.
 
After lunch, attendees heard a presentation on the perils of microtransit and the impact on our members’ jobs.
 
Also joining Costa at the Caucus were International Vice Presidents Jim Lindsay, Manny Sforza, Natalie Cruz, Art Aguilar, Mark Henry, Michael Cornelius, and Caucus President Ismael Rivera. Day two starts tomorrow. Todos Unidos!
