It was a busy week for the ATU in Washington, DC, as more than 50 Local Presidents/Business Agents and Financial Secretaries from across the U.S. and Canada attended the ATU’s New Officers’ training. At this innovative training, attendees learned new strategies to strengthen their Locals and empower their members to get involved and prepare for the battles ahead.
At the closing banquet, International President John Costa addressed the Local officers about their important roles, the challenges they face, and the critical skills they learned this week. “It’s been a great week at the training, learning from our staff and interacting with your fellow Local officers,” said Costa. “You have an important role at your Local. I know it’s a difficult job. And remember, you can’t do this job from behind a desk. You have to get out and meet with your members and get them involved. Thank you for all you do, and please know that the International is here to support you.”
Over the week, the Local leaders heard from experts and staff on various topics to build the necessary foundation to best serve their Locals, their members, and our Union. The topics covered included Local Union Officers & Executive Board Member roles, 13c, Collective Bargaining and Joint Industry Councils, Government Affairs, Politics, ATU-COPE, Organizing, Campaigns, Workforce Development and Apprenticeships, Research, Health and Safety, Strategic Communications, Mental Health Awareness and more.
International Executive Vice President Yvette Trujillo, International Secretary-Treasurer Ken Kirk and ATU Canada President John Di Nino were also in attendance at the training.
Thank you to our newest Local leaders for your commitment and dedication to our Union and the work that lies ahead.
