Today in San Jose, CA, over 75+ Shop Stewards from various Locals across California participated in ATU’s revamped Shop Steward training program. This program aims to equip Shop Stewards with the skills and knowledge they need to effectively represent their fellow members and our Union.
International Executive Vice-President Yvette Trujillo kicked off the training along with International Vice Presidents James Lindsay and Michael Cornelius.
“Before becoming the Executive Vice-President of the ATU, I was just like you, a Shop Steward. Coming up through the ranks, starting off as a Shop Steward, Recording Secretary then the President of Local 1001-Denver, CO. I know that Shop Stewards are the core of every union. You protect and empower our members and fight for fairness on the job, making sure that every voice is heard and their rights are protected,” Trujillo told the attendees. “Being a Shop Steward is not just a title; it comes with the understanding, responsibility and commitment to protect our members. You are the frontline of the Union. That’s why we’re here this weekend. This training represents the future of our Union. So, take in as much as you can, and keep up the fantastic work you’re doing.”
Led by staff from ATU International, the interactive training emphasized the vital role of Shop Stewards by equipping them with the tools necessary to advocate effectively for their members within their Locals. It included discussions on leadership, organization, and effective communication. Participants gained essential skills, strategies, and a deeper understanding of a Shop Steward's rights, empowering them to strengthen their Locals, safeguard their members, and prepare for future challenges. The training incorporated practical exercises where attendees learned about their legal rights, negotiation tactics, grievance procedures, and the various responsibilities associated with the role. With this new group of knowledgeable and skilled Shop Stewards, ATU is ensuring that workers' voices are heard and their rights are upheld.
